Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics, Fiberglass, FRP

Fiber Glass Reinforced Plastics, also known as FRP, Glasfaserverstärkter Kunststoff (GFK), RTRP (Reinforced Thermosetting Resin Plastic), RTP (Reinforced Thermoset Plastic) is one of the most important components of our products. FRP material is used for its high mechanical strength, light weight, corrosion and temperature resistant properties, thermal insulation, smooth internal surface, easy to form complex shapes, ease of repair and its cost effectiveness.

Basically, FRP consists of thermosetting resins and glass fiber. With regard to composing these ingredients and choosing the right resins, best winding techniques and glass fiber components to guarantee the quality and the benefits of the materials, Plasticon Composites is the right choice for your partner.

Making a thermosetting product involves a chemical reaction in which molecules are formed and warmth is released. Once the new network of molecules exists, it creates its final shape. This network of molecules ensures fire resistance when the material is heated. Thermosetting materials are polyester, epoxy and polyurethane resins. Plasticon Composites applies different types of thermosetting depending on the medium and conditions in which the final product will be installed.

Glass fiber is used to improve the mechanical strength, resistance to damage from the outside and to maintain a fixed shape. Glass fiber comes in a wide variety of shapes; mats, roving, chopped strands, glass veil and bands. Plasticon Composites selects the correct composition of glass fiber and is able to apply, work and laminate this material to guaranteed products with the highest mechanical strength and its corrosion resistance.

If necessary, Plasticon Composites uses other fibers in the products, such as carbon.

Experience and expertise is key to ensuring that customers are supplied with well-designed FRP products. It is Plasticon Composites’ daily business to advise, inform and even train our customers in the art of composing FRP products.

Full FRP products of Plasticon Composites always include a Chemical Barrier Layer (CBL) and a structural layer, both made from FRP. The CBL is the inner layer of the product and has direct contact with the medium. The difference between the CBL and the structural layer is that the CBL contains a higher resin to glass ration than the structural layers. Designing the correct layers and the adhesion between the layers is a skill that should only be done by the experts of Plasticon Composites.

Initially, polyester resins were mainly used as a base material for the reinforcement layers. Following the impressive development of resins by resin manufacturers, the resins can now also be used for corrosion applications as a chemical barrier layer on the inside of a product. The main resins used by Plasticon Composites are:

  • Orthopthalic Resin
  • Isopthalic Resin
  • Isopthalic Neo Pentyl Glycol Resin
  • Bisphenolic Resin
  • Therephtalic resin
  • Vinyl ester Resin
  • Fire Retardant Resin

Full FRP products of Plasticon Composites are used by industries worldwide for the processing of (chemical) fluids, storage of fluids and processing wet or dry gases.

FRP products are ideal for on-site installation. Our international team of certified laminators handles installation jobs for customers all over the world.
